Temporal Distortion

I’m posting this more for the visuals than the music, though the soundtrack (by Bear McCreary of Battlestar Galactica/Walking Dead fame) is quite lovely.

This is simply a beautiful look at our little corner of the universe.

There is a 23 minute extended cut, available for digital download here http://dakotalapse.com/?p=877 The feature is 23+ minutes of Milky Way, Aurora and other night timelapse, it has 2 original scores by Simon Wilkinson http://www.thebluemask.com , as well as some from his royalty free collection.

What you see is real, but you can’t see it this way with the naked eye. It is the result of thousands of 20-30 second exposures, edited together to produce the timelapse. This allows you to see the Milky Way, Aurora and other Phenonmena, in a way you wouldn’t normally see them.

In the opening “Dakotalapse” title shot, you see bands of red and green moving across the sky. After asking several Astronomers, they are possible noctilucent clouds, airglow or faint Aurora. I never got a definite answer to what it is. You can also see the red and green bands in other shots.

At :53 and 2:17 seconds into the video you see a Meteor with a Persistent Train. Which is ionizing gases, which lasted over a half hour in the cameras frame. Phil Plait wrote an article about the phenomena here http://blogs.discovermagazine.com/badastronomy/2011/10/02/a-meteors-lingering-tale/
There is a second Meteor with a much shorter persistent train at 2:51 in the video. This one wasn’t backlit by the moon like the first, and moves out of the frame quickly.

The Aurora were shot in central South Dakota in September 2011 and near Madison, Wisconsin on October 25, 2011.

Watch for two Deer at 1:27

Most of the video was shot near the White River in central South Dakota during September and October 2011, there are other shots from Arches National Park in Utah, and Canyon of the Ancients area of Colorado during June 2011.

Palancar - The Tender Hand of the Unseen

I feel bad that it took me so long to give this release a good listen. That’s my loss.

Palancar has crafted some truly beautiful tracks here. And these were not supposed to be the final mixes (the basic tracks being lost in a hard drive crash…).

There are some beautiful moments strung through these tracks, but the whole collection is worth the title track alone. Take a listen:

Phillip Wilkerson – The Stars and Afterward

February 7th, 2012 § 1 comment § permalink

It is always a pleasure to welcome a new release from my friend Phillip Wilkerson. It’s especially gratifying since I’ve been listening to this music for months and it’s hard not to share something so great.

Today marks the official release (Phillip was kind enough to allow me to play some of the music on my show last week) of The Stars and Afterward.  The album presents a mix of ambient drone and Berlin-school inspired space music filtered through Phillip’s artful melodic and harmonic sense.

Take a listen:

Now, this is NOT a free download. While the focus of this blog is on free music, I do also like to highlight commercial music from artists who have a large repertoire of free music. And the entire collection is only $4 to download (actually $2 if you use the promotional code “freefloating” during checkout!). Phillip’s music is worth far more than this. If you want an actual CD you can get it for less than $10 including delivery….

This is another excellent piece of work from Phillip (which I am very proud to have been involved with–I designed the cover artwork…). Take a listen and grab yourself a CD or download.

New from Altus: ECOTONE

November 13th, 2011 § 0 comments § permalink

One of my absolute favorite artists has just released a new album, ECOTONE.

While there are some gentle drifting pieces, there is also quite a bit of cinematic feeling to many of the pieces (a style at which Altus definitely excels).

Take a look at the promo video above and then head over to Altus’ site for the FREE DOWNLOAD.

As always, with Altus, you will not be disappointed.

Conception mentioned in Beat magazine

November 10th, 2011 § 0 comments § permalink

Beat magazine

German electronic magazine Beat highlighted the Conception compilation in its December 2011 issue. The article is a summary of music available on the net.  It’s not a review or anything, but it’s nice to get a mention.

Here’s a little scan of the blurb on the page:

Conception in Beat

Translation:

"Conception" offers 22 first insights into
the music of free-floating netlabels,

It was good to see my friends David Herpich and Phillip Wilkerson mentioned there as well.

FF-085 – November 2, 2011 – Lily Pond Orchestra

I decided for this show to highlight one of my absolute favorite ambient albums ever, Beautiful Day by Lily Pond Orchestra (aka Doug Lee).

The album consists of two intensely beautiful long form pieces.  Whenever I’m looking to find a space of deep relaxation and peace I turn to these two pieces.  They create an expansive space to just drift and be.  I just find them exquisite.  I hope you will too.

NOTE: As I have mentioned before, I have created my own cover art for some LPO releases because I find they better represent (to me) the serene beauty of the music.  If you’re interested in the cover art that I created for this album, you can download it HERE.
